If an IT career is your destination, then

Computer Certifications

are the tickets you need to get there. Getting certified enables you to showcase the critical skills you've acquired and opens the door to career entry and advancement. These five computer certifications represent some of the most popular starter credentials for professionals pursuing an IT career.

1. CompTIA A+
A+ is one of the most widely chosen computer certifications for launching an IT career. This certification confirms your ability to perform tasks such as installation, configuration, diagnosing, preventive maintenance, and basic networking. CompTIA's 2006 exam update added major topic areas including security, safety, environmental issues, communication, and professionalism. To earn this credential, you'll need to pass the A+ Essentials exam, plus one of three additional exams: IT technician, remote support technician, or depot technician. Cost: $158

2. Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP)
All current MCP exams measure your ability to perform a set of job function-based skills, and they serve as a stepping stone for future Microsoft computer certifications. To earn the MCP credential, you'll need to pass a current Microsoft certification exam, such as one of the Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) or Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) exams. If you plan to pursue a certification track beyond the MCP, choose an exam that will apply to that track. Cost: About $125

3. CompTIA Security+
Successful completion of the 90-minute Security+ exam validates an IT career professional's knowledge of communication security, infrastructure security, cryptography, operational security, and general security concepts. Certification candidates are encouraged to have at least two years of on-the-job networking experience, with an emphasis on security. Cost: $244

4. Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
This certification indicates a foundation in and apprentice knowledge of networking. CCNA certified professionals can install, configure, and operate LAN, WAN, and dial access services for small networks, including but not limited to use of these protocols: IP, IGRP, Serial, Frame Relay, IP RIP, VLANs, RIP, Ethernet, Access Lists. CCNA computer certifications are valid for three years. Cost: $125 (one-exam option); $200 (two-exam option)

5. Sun Certified Programmer for the Java 2 Platform (SCJP)
This foundation certification is for IT career professionals interested in demonstrating proficiency in the fundamentals of the Java programming language. To pass the exam, you need to understand the basic syntax and structure of the Java programming language and be able to create Java technology applications that run on server and desktop systems. Cost: $200
