According to Money magazine, software engineers have the best jobs in America. And computer information technology analysts are not too far behind. In fact, predictions claim there will be a shortage of IT professionals as many who started working in the early 1970s are eligible for retirement.

With the high-tech age underway, the high-tech extravaganza is also surfacing in higher education. In fact, participants at the Higher Education Leadership Forum delved into issues related to how technology is shaping society, particularly in higher education.

So how does technology fit into higher ed? Because of the Internet and other advances in technology, students have access to virtual libraries among other enhancements. While some say students and educators should be careful of these advances claiming we, as a society, shouldn't become to complacent on technology, proponents like Richard A. Detweiler, president of Great Lakes Colleges Association and president emeritus of Hartwick College, says, "The digital age can enhance liberal education. It can do so if we make appropriate use of digital opportunities. Part of the answer, of course, is to use technology to heighten the learning experience."
